By utilizing portable cutting test set developed by ITU Mining Engineering Mine Mechanization and Technology Department, cutting tests can be performed on core specimens and specimens having 10 x 10 x 10 cm dimensions. Since the set is small scaled, it can be easily used by researchers studying on geosciences related topics, contractors carrying out excavation works, firms surveying areas etc. and results can be assessed. A dynamometre and computer supported data collecting system is used for obtaining data of forces on three axis applied on a standard disc cutter. Specific energy values calculated by shear force and excavated material is used for classifying rocks by their cuttabilities, therefore, selection of appropriate excavation and tunnelling equipment and performance estimation can be carried out on geological formations represented by the specimen.
